Q: What is Champions of Equality?
A: Champions of Equality is an awards reception honoring the leadership of individuals who have made significant contributions in improving the quality of life for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. This event is hosted by SAVE, South Florida's largest LGBT advocacy organization. All proceeds benefit the movement towards LGBT equality in our community.
Q: Who is being honored?
A: This year's honorees include The Honorable State Representative David Richardson, Florida's first elected openly LGBT state legislator, County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, known for bringing before the commission a proposal to update the countywide Human Rights Ordinance to protect all residents of Miami-Dade County, and filmmaker Joe Cardona, who earlier this year produced the documentary The Day it Snowed in Miami about the birth of the local LGBT movement.
In addition, this year we will induct into our hall of champions the eight couple represented by SAVE and the ACLU of Florida in Grimsley et al. v Scott, the lawsuit filed in federal court with the aim of achieving legal recognition from the state of Florida for same-sex couples married in states with marriage equality. For more information on this case, go to savedade.org/marriage.
Q: When and where is the event?
A: This year's reception will take place May 9th at 6PM at the Hyatt Regency Miami located at 400 SE 2nd Avenue.
Q: How do I sell tickets?
A: There are two way for you to sell tickets:
1) Online (preferred). You should have received a personalized link for the purpose of selling tickets online. All you have to do is tell your friends to buy their tickets with a credit card at that link, and our system will automatically credit you with that sale. It's that simple!
2) By check. If your friends would like to purchase their tickets by check, you can collect it yourself and drop it off at our office, have them drop it off at our office, or have the check sent to our office. Whichever way you choose to do it, our office is located at 4500 Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 340, Miami, FL 33137. You will also need to let us know who has sold the ticket and the email address of the recipient of the ticket.
Q: Is this a dinner or a reception?
A: Champions of Equality is a cocktail reception, not a sit-down dinner. That being said, this year we've added some extra fun. There will be an open bar with plenty of bars and food for your enjoyment, in addition to the silent auction, awards ceremony and a special performance by the Little House on the Ferry Equality Tour. Afterwards, The Voice's Karina Iglesias and DJ Gemini will play music for your dancing pleasure until the event ends.
