Follow below the fold for a special message from Florida's first openly gay state legislator, Representative David Richardson
Hello from our State Capital!
I jumped at the chance to update you on my work when SAVE Dade offered me this opportunity to communicate with you. The first thing I want to say is - THANK YOU! Many of you from SAVE Dade supported me, and I want you all to know that I am appreciative and here for you.
What an incredible few months it has been since the general election, and I haven't wasted any time in getting started to better serve our community. My first action was to build a team that will set me up for success in my first year. My Legislative Aide is a Tallahassee veteran with eight years of experience - Ms. Avery Coleman. I am also fortunate to have found Ms. Virginia Morgan, a talented recent college graduate. Avery will assist me with legislative work in Tallahassee while Virginia will be my district aide - managing our two local offices (Miami Beach and Little Havana).
I've been given my committee assignments; committees are where the real work happens and the business of legislating takes place. It is very exciting and as a community we could not be more pleased with my assignments: Finance & Tax Subcommittee, Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee, Transportation & Economic Development Appropriations Subcommittee, Health Innovation Subcommittee, and Rulemaking Oversight & Repeal Subcommittee.
It is not the norm for a freshman to be assigned to so many appropriation subcommittees (these committees decide how taxpayer dollars are collected and spent). I believe it is a strong message that Tallahassee's Republican and Democratic leadership care less about me being gay, and care more about my ability as a businessman and accountant.
The legislative session still doesn't start for over a month, but I've already been to Tallahassee five times. In fact, I'll be in Tallahassee almost full time until early May; this is my full time work now. It is truly an honor to serve all the constituents of District 113 and all LGBT Floridians.
Together we can do what is best for the state of Florida.
If you have any questions for me or have a problem in the district, please send me an email at email@example.com.
Until my next update I wish you all well.
Florida Representative David Richardson
