Liberating Religious Liberty & Affirming Our Faith Through Action

Despite historic victories for the LGBTQ community here in Florida and across the country in 2015 our job is far from over. All across the country, we are seeing an increase in anti-LGBTQ and anti-Choice policy that use religious freedoms has an excuse to discriminate. Here in Florida, we saw this in early 2015 when the House attempted to limit access to adoption based on religious refusals and we are seeing it again in the form of the Pastor Protection Act and a far worse threat from HB 401 the “Right to Discriminate Bill.”

Here and across the country our hard fought gains for equality are slowly being eroded under the guise of religious liberty. More than ever, now is the time to stand up with one voice and form a united front that affirms that our community is in support of equality, not in spite of our faith, but because of it.

We are inviting clergy, faith leaders and all people interested in taking action to join us on Tuesday, December 8th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm for an interfaith convening. During the first part of the afternoon , we will discuss the challenges that communities affected by religious refusals laws will likely face in the coming years (including the LGBTQ community) and the importance of a faith based response to such threats. And during the second half, we will work to discover and create opportunities and possibilities to grow a coalition and begin taking a stand together while planning concrete next steps.

I would be very interested in joining this coalition, as I believe it is essential for faith communities to show our support for LGBT equality. However, as a Rabbi I am very surprised that Temple Israel is hosting this gathering on a Friday afternoon, actually into Shabbat. If there is another meeting, on a different day of the week, and/or in Broward county, please let me know. Thank you.
