A recent episode of the ABC hidden camera reality show What Would You Do? featured a male-to-female transgender teen trying on prom dresses at a boutique in the town of Wayne, New Jersey.
The teen begins to argue with her father over the fact that he prefers to wear a dress, but unbeknownst to the rest of the patrons in the store, the teen and her supposed parents are all actually actors. The reactions of the bystanders in the store to the developing altercation between the trans teen and supposed father are interesting and illuminating.
Some of the bystanders attempt to stick up for the trans teen, while others listen to the supposed father's insults and take a pass on getting involved in the situation. Watch the clip from the episode below:
What do you think about the set up? Do the actors authentically portray something that transgender teenagers may struggle with? Will it help viewers to understand a little bit about what it's like to be trans? Or does the situation feel contrived and phony? Discuss.
