In Miami-Dade County, you can be...
FIRED from work...
simply for being WHO YOU ARE.
We will soon have the opportunity to end the injustice.
Currently there are no local or state protections for people that are transgender or gender non-conforming that fight against discrimination in employment, housing or public accommodations. Further more, we know that discrimination is rampant for these communities. A recent survey conducted by the National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce reports that 90% of transgender and gender non-conforming people surveyed experienced harassment or mistreatment on the job.
Safeguarding American Values for Everyone is in the process of updating Miami-Dade’s Human Rights Ordinance (HRO) to include gender identity and gender expression as protected classes.
SAVE Foundation proposes to continue to expand its grassroots education campaign to lay the groundwork necessary for such an update and to safeguard against any efforts to repeal the ordinance. SAVE Foundation will focus on three key areas:
1.) Educating the Hispanic population of Miami-Dade, SAVE will continue to have one-on-one conversations with the Hispanic community, both in English and Spanish, SAVE Foundation will increase public support for a trans inclusive HRO and reduce anti-trans prejudice.
2.) Building an faith coalition in Miami-Dade to grow visible support in faith communities for trans-equality and act as a counter message to opponents of equality.
3.) Continued leadership development with the LGBT community to ensure that the local community will have the next generation of leaders trained in how to do grassroots prejudice reduction.
Grassroots prejudice reduction work is at the heart of SAVE Foundation’s mission. For over 20 years, SAVE has been having one-on-one conversations with the community to promote equality.
