OUTLaw is the University of Miami School of Law student organization dedicated to the LGBTQ+ students. We are reaching out to the community to help raise funds for OUTLaw students to attend the National LGBT Bar Association's Annual Lavender Law Career Fair being held in New York City this year. The annual Lavender Law Career Fair provides an opportunity for law students to interview with law firms from all over the country, as well as with government agencies, LGBT rights groups and corporate departments. Many national law firms hire from Lavender Law and several University of Miami OUTLaw students have secured legal positions and started their legal careers thanks to their attendance at Lavender Law. The other components of Lavender Law include panels discussing current legal issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community, networking and career counseling.

The University of Miami School of Law has been and remains extremely supportive of OUTLaw and has funded and continues to fund students in the past. Over the last few years the University has been able to fund two students. There are seven OUTLaw students interested in participating in the Career Fair this year and it would be unfortunate if their only obstacle to attending were not having enough funds. Realistically, it would be great if we could send six students this year and the University has graciously agreed to fund an additional student (for a total of 3 students) and we are looking to fund the other 3 students from private contributions.

OUTLaw has explored alternate hotels to the conference hotel, however, New York hotels are obviously expensive and there is airfare, registration fees, and other costs.

OUTLaw has already been an active member in our community and is already giving back in several ways. OUTLaw brought the YES Institute to the University of Miami for a dialogue on sexual orientation and gender identity. OUTLaw students attended DragOUT to raise money for the LGBTQ Alliance, which benefits homeless LGBTQ youth. OUTLaw, with the sponsorship of other affinity groups, also held a well-attended Diversity-in-Law Panel featuring diverse members of our legal community including a federal Judge and members of the private and public sector sharing stories about overcoming adversity on the road to success and providing guidance and advice to the attending students. OUTLaw continues to grow not only in membership but in student participation in their events including their Professional Mentorship event held at Bilzin Sumberg that led to the pairing of OUTLaw students with legal professionals.

The current law students are the ones who will help support our key LGBTQ+ organizations in the future and who will continue the battles to help protect and secure our rights. Attendees have benefited in the past from participating in the Lavender Law Career Fair and we hope the current students interested in attending will have an opportunity to benefit this year as well.

Please consider donating to help send more than just the two currently funded students.
