At SAVE, we believe elections matter. Central to our democracy is the ability to cast votes freely in a process to choose our leaders across every level of government. Today more than ever, your vote and voice matter most when there are anti-LGBTQ candidates vying for public office, some erroneously creating doubt over the validity of elections and even suppressing votes. This attempt to silence us is a fundamental threat to democracy.
Our latest “I’m speaking” campaign is a reminder to use your voice by voting. When you vote, you are exercising the greatest form of protest by making yourself heard despite efforts to silence you. The mantra honors the courage of Kamala Harris who repeatedly told Mike Pence "I'm speaking," as he interrupted her in the 2020 vice presidential debate. But Harris would not allow it, and challenged him multiple times, by saying: "Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking. I'm speaking." She let it be known that her voice, and that of all people for whom she spoke, needed to be heard.
The poignant moment exemplified on live television the rampant cultural efforts to dismiss powerful emerging voices of a new America. We remind you and your loved ones to vote at every possible opportunity and ensure your voice is heard.
